In my quest to find the best protein bar on the market, today I’m breaking down the Good! Choc. P.B. bar.
But first things first…
According to their website:
“What if your protein bar tasted like a candy bar? Too good to be true? Not anymore. We set out to create a different kind of protein bar. One that is soft, tasty, and still amazingly nutritious.
We searched for the best plant-based ingredients to hide 15g of protein inside every delicious bar. The result is a crave worthy treat without the guilt.
So what’s our secret? Maybe it's magic, maybe it’s just really talented people, but either way it’s definitely good!”
I have a feeling it’s going to be too good to be true.
Well… only one way to find out.
Good! say this about their protein bar:
“Chocolate and Peanut Butter are good by themselves, but together, they are an unstoppable force of deliciousness. Rich chocolate on the outside, smooth peanut butter on the inside, and 15g of plant-based protein just for good measure.
Chocolate, peanut butter, and 15g of plant-based protein. Looks like your peanut butter cup has grown up.
That… sounds pretty good.
But they don’t really tell us anything about the nutrition or quality of ingredients.
Because the only way to know if they’re “good” for you (pun intended) is by looking at their ingredient list.
Let’s put these ingredients into an easy to read list.
As might already know, the FDA requires food manufacturers to list their ingredients in order by weight.
Now…
What do you see?
I see protein from fava beans, tapioca fiber, and a lot of sugar. And then palm oil and glycerin. But how much sugar?
Let’s look at the macros:
Protein: 15g
Carbs: 26g
Fiber: 11g
Net Carbs: 15g
15g of sugar is definitely on the high side. You should look for a bar with less than 10 grams of net carbs.
Anyway, let’s break down the rest of the ingredients:
Tapioca Sugar:Tapioca sugar is made from cassava and is considered a healthier alternative to sugar. But tapioca sugar (70) has a higher glycemic index than table sugar (65). So, it’s not great for blood sugar control.
Plus, this bar also uses cane sugar. Not good.
Palm Kernel Oil: Palm oil is the cheapest oil you can buy and almost all of it is unsustainable. So, even though No Cow says their palm oil is sustainably sourced (i.e. NOT from cutting down rainforests to plant palm trees), then can still have a lot of pesticides and other chemicals.
Overall, not a high quality ingredient.
Glycerin: Glycerin helps preserve moisture, prevents sugar crystallization, and adds bulk, smoothness, softness, sweetness, and texture to foods. But it’s a sugar alcohol which means too much of it can give you gut problems.
What if your protein bar tasted like a candy bar? Well… this bar is pretty much a candy bar. Even though it has 15 grams of protein, it still has 15 grams of sugar (net carbs) and they also use palm oil and glycerin (which is a sugar alcohol).
So, if you’re looking for a candy bar with protein, then get this.
Otherwise I can’t recommend it.
But if you’re looking for a real protein bar without sugar alcohols and sourced from 100% real food ingredients, see below. 👇
