GoMacro is the bar your yoga instructor recommends. This Wisconsin-based brand has carved out a loyal niche among organic, plant-based, and macrobiotic-diet followers since 2004. With over 45,000 monthly searches, GoMacro proves there's a real audience for protein bars that prioritize ingredient purity over protein maximization.
But can a bar made with "macrobiotic" principles actually compete in the protein bar market? Here's the honest review.
Here's what you're getting per MacroBar (65g):
Let's be real: these macros are not competitive for a "protein bar." 10–12g of protein for 260–290 calories is a poor ratio. The sugar (10–14g) and net carbs (28–33g) are among the highest we've reviewed. Nature Valley has better macros, and that's saying something.
GoMacro would be more accurately categorized as a "meal bar" or "energy bar" than a protein bar. They just happen to have some protein in them.
GoMacro uses organic pea protein and organic brown rice protein — a clean, allergen-friendly, vegan combination that provides a complete amino acid profile. The protein quality itself is excellent; there's just not enough of it per bar.
Here's what's in a GoMacro Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip MacroBar:
This is where GoMacro earns its reputation. The ingredient list is remarkably clean. Everything is organic. No palm oil. No maltitol. No sucralose. No collagen filler. No glycerin. No "natural flavors" hiding behind vague labels.
Organic Brown Rice Syrup as the first ingredient means sugar is the primary component by weight. It's organic sugar, but it's still sugar. GoMacro sacrifices macros for ingredient purity — a deliberate trade-off.
Coconut Oil instead of palm oil is a better fat choice, both nutritionally and environmentally.
GoMacro bars are also USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Certified Vegan, Gluten-Free Certified, Kosher, and C.L.E.A.N. Certified. That's more certifications than any other protein bar we've reviewed. For our full list of clean options, see our cleanest protein bars guide.

GoMacro Mini Bars:
Good variety with a clear theme: nut/seed butters + chocolate. The Mini Bars (200 cal) are a newer addition for portion control.
GoMacro bars have a soft, slightly sticky, chewy texture driven by the brown rice syrup and nut butter base. They taste like homemade granola bars — earthy, naturally sweet, and satisfying. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip is genuinely delicious if you like the natural/organic flavor profile.
If you're coming from Quest or Barebells, GoMacro will taste very different — less candy-like, more "health food store." That's either a pro or a con depending on your palate. The chocolate chips add nice texture contrast.
GoMacro bars retail for $29.99 for a 12-pack ($2.50/bar) on their website or $3.00–$3.50 at Whole Foods and similar retailers. This is premium pricing for a bar with only 10–12g of protein. You're paying for organic certification and ingredient purity, not protein density.
They're not ideal for anyone prioritizing protein intake, macro trackers, low-carb/keto dieters, or budget-conscious shoppers.
GoMacro and LyfeFuel's Essential Nutrition Bar share a clean-ingredient philosophy, but LyfeFuel delivers significantly more nutrition per bar: 12g protein (vs 10g), 11g fiber (vs 2–4g), 21 vitamins and minerals, and only 4g sugar (vs 10–14g). LyfeFuel also adds functional superfoods like MCT oil and adaptogens. GoMacro is the purest ingredient list; LyfeFuel is the most complete nutrition profile.
GoMacro is the cleanest protein bar on the market — and that's both its strength and its limitation. The all-organic, vegan, gluten-free formula with zero artificial anything is genuinely impressive. But 10–12g of protein, 260+ calories, and 10–14g of sugar means it doesn't compete as a protein bar. GoMacro is better understood as a premium organic snack bar that happens to have some protein. If ingredient purity is your #1 priority and you don't mind the macros, GoMacro is excellent. For everyone else, there are better protein bars.
